Who is it for?

Many people come to acupuncture for help with specific problems and symptoms. Others choose acupuncture to maintain health or because they don’t feel as well as they could. This is because acupuncture acts both as a treatment and as a preventative therapy.

The aim of diagnosis and treatment

The aim of your individual diagnosis and course of treatment is to build a complete picture of you – to understand your health history and treatment goals. During the diagnosis I will identify the root of any current health problems and areas that need to be strengthened in order for the system to function at its optimum.

Because acupuncturists seek to understand and work with your unique constitution you will find that acupuncture treatment can go beyond the temporary alleviation of symptoms.  Patients are often surprised by what a course of acupuncture treatment can achieve.

Conditions and symptoms

Although acupuncture treatment is administered in the context of the patient rather than the symptom(s) some of the problems people commonly seek help with include:

  • gastro-intestinal problems
  • headaches & migraine
  • musculo-skeletal problems
  • endocrine disorders
  • gynaecological disorders
  • immune issues
  • respiratory problems
  • addiction
  • genito-urinary problems
  • emotional and psychological issues
  • neurological disorders
  • weight loss
  • nausea / morning sickness

Fertility, pregnancy and childbirth

Some women choose to have acupuncture throughout pregnancy and childbirth to improve outcomes and it is becoming increasingly popular with couples dealing with problems of fertility or to support IVF treatment. If your midwife has suggested you have treatment to turn a breech baby or an acupuncture labour induction – or this is something you have researched yourself – I will be more than happy to chat with you. If it is appropriate for you to be treated I can arrange to see you as soon as possible.

How does acupuncture fit with conventional medicine?

Acupuncture is considered safe for all ages and can be used alongside conventional medicine. For some people, improving symptoms in order to reduce prescription medicine is a major consideration and this will always be done in consultation with your consultant or GP.
